Absolutely beautiful!
It’s original dam, built by Colonists and Indians, is the oldest in Connecticut. The first mill was destroyed by a huge flood in 1750. In 1775, the mill was rebuilt by Joseph Rockwell. Corn, buckwheat, and rye were ground at the grist mill and stored in large bins until ready to be sold. The kitchen area was then the first Post Office with the miller as the postmaster. A brick yard and ice house were also on the property. Ice was cut on the pond, stored and covered with sawdust which made it last all year.
The Podunk Indians were once three clans, the Nameroke of Warehouse Point, the Hockanum of East Hartford, and the Scanticookes. They camped on the river, fishing for shad and salmon, hunting for deer and small game, raising corn, beans, squash, tobacco, and helping the Colonists build the dam. In return, the settlers gave them protection from the warring tribes of the Pequots and Mohigans.
Eventually, the dam was widened and recapped over the original field stone once built by the Indians, with a covered bridge. The building was completely restored with timbers and boards from nine tobacco sheds. This once crumbling, condemned, ex-mill, is now one of the most picturesque restaurants in Connecticut.
Today, with a reputation of excellence for over thirty years, The Mill on the River is the flagship restaurant of the Mill Restaurant Group. The Mill on the River is the perfect blend of traditional New England comfort and upscale dining elegance.”

OMG 😆 I absolutely LOVE this venue. The owner is awesome; Staffs are amazing,The Facility is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. “The house was originally built as a single family residence in 1865 by a prominent Welles family. There were several Welles family residences in Glastonbury during the mid-to-late 1800’s including Gideon Welles, United States Secretary of the Navy during President Lincoln and Johnson’s administrations. As the years proceeded it became an Inn for sailors to reside, while they built ships nearby at the NAP Brothers building on Naubuc Avenue. In the early days of Glastonbury (in the 1600s) – Naubuc Avenue was the original main street in the town, which travels along the river. The house is located in a National Historic District entitled “Curtisville”. The house is 148 years old, and was quality built. Bill Luby & Corrine Crocker-Luby have acquired the house in October, 2007. They’ve changed the layout of the main floor (to make it more open) and added on a two-story addition to the back of the house to accommodate a nearly 750 square foot open ballroom, which can seat up to 88 people. The entire first floor is nearly 2,300 square feet, which accommodates the entire event space. Overall, it is simply charming, warm & friendly. If you’re interested, either Corrine or Bill would be available to take you on a personal tour.”

Absolutely Beautiful! “In 1900, three years after his marriage to Katharine Fearing Hubbard, Colonel Clarence S. Wadsworth began preparing plans for the site of their future country summer residence, “Long Hill” in the rolling hills of western Middletown. An authority on the emerging science of forestry and conservation, Colonel Wadsworth had a concern for the environment far ahead of his time. Working with the nationally renowned landscape architectural firm, the Olmsted Brothers, 500 acres of Long Hill were designed in the tradition of a working landscape. They created an estate that evolved from the formal and classical near the Mansion to varied, well-managed forests and pastures. The New York architecture firm of Hoppin and Koen designed a domain on par with the estates of Lenox, Massachusetts, and the “cottages” of Newport, Rhode Island. For over 30 years, Long Hill was the center of ceremonial life for the Wadsworth and Hubbard families. In 1934, a thousand guests, escorted by the Governor’s Foot Guard, celebrated the wedding of the Wadsworths’ son Julius and his wife Cleome at Long Hill.”
Unique events for unique couples
Housed in a lovingly restored 1901 post-and-beam factory, this fascinating museum allows guests to step back in time as they marvel at over 100 years of carousel art and history—intricately carved animals and chariots, art pieces, and memorabilia from the days when the carousel was the "pinnacle of amusement park joy".
Say "I do" in The Main Gallery surrounded by a collection of hundreds of antique treasures. Once you're wed, you can continue the party here, or move upstairs to the charming ballroom, with its ample dance floor and sparkling Venetian crystal chandeliers.

"GARDENS AND GROUNDS OF ELIZABETH PARK
Opened to the public in 1897, Elizabeth Park is the horticultural park of the Hartford park system. Because of its gardens, it has been called the, “Flower of New England Parks.” The rose garden is the heart and soul of the park and is the first public rose garden in the country, opened in 1904.
When the city took over the estate from Charles Pond, as Elizabeth Park, there were already a large variety of trees and existing plantings. The city hired Swiss-born landscape architect Theodore Wirth to design the park. Using his training from his work in Paris and London, Mr. Wirth created a true botanical park with Victorian formal gardens, which comprise a large variety of flowers, shrubs, and trees with a country vista as a backdrop.
Elizabeth Park is 101 acres located in both West Hartford and Hartford, Connecticut. For over 100 years, the rose garden at Elizabeth Park has been an attraction for thousands of people each year. It is a major attraction for Hartford and Connecticut residents and is considered one of the major tourist destinations for national and international visitors. “

“PARK HISTORY
The majority of the land, 130 acres, was a gift from Clarence H. Wickham, whose will mandated that the property become a park following the death of his wife, Edith Wickham. A bequeath of 67 acres was given in 1967 by Myrtle Williams who owned land adjacent to the property (Private 10). Through land swaps and purchases, Wickham Park has expanded to the current 250 acres of land.
Upon his death in 1945, Clarence Wickham also left the bulk of his financial estate to fund Wickham Park. Bank of America, originally Hartford National Bank, manages the trust which finances both the operation and maintenance of the park. While the trust provides for a majority of the operating expenses, donations, fees, and charges are required to deliver the highest quality park experience possible.
Landscape architects Olmsted Associates, Inc., based out of Brookline, Mass., created the park’s original design (Private 10). The plan called for the mansion on the property to be used as the home for the park superintendent. Extensive maintenance costs led to the home being torn down in 1964. The maintenance building, which now houses the park’s offices, was originally the Wickham’s carriage house. The log cabin, built in 1927 as a meeting place for family and friends, burned to the ground in 1989. A replica now stands on the original location which overlooks Hartford. The park opened officially on July 1, 1961, one year after the death of Edith Wickham.
Mr. And Mrs. Wickham wanted the public to enjoy their estate, named The Pines and while occupying the property, “derived supreme satisfaction in unselfishly, and in the spirit of sincere hospitality, permitting others to enjoy their privilege” (Case 7). Today, Wickham Park bases its development around the enjoyment of nature, an idea the Wickham’s promoted throughout their lives.“
